Believe it or not, people are still getting married in 2020, but weddings look and feel a lot different this year due to the global pandemic. Couples who haven’t canceled their weddings are opting for more scaled-back and socially distant wedding ceremonies and receptions.

Those who haven’t postponed their nuptials are getting married in 2020 and planning for a “sequel wedding” in 2021. We have had to reschedule many Philadelphia area wedding catering bookings for later in 2020, with some events pushed to next year.

What is a sequel wedding?

The concept of a sequel wedding is not new, but we are hearing from clients who are still getting married legally this year but have opted to delay their celebrations until 2021. Some couples have smaller, more intimate ceremonies this year and will pull out all of the stops next year for the sequel wedding. Call it double the wedding fun!

The sequel wedding trend is a new norm for 2020. This year’s “minimonies,” micro weddings, and elopements allow couples to plan an even grander reception celebration for the sequel wedding.

It’s a break from tradition, but these are unprecedented times, and couples need to do what is best for them and their family. We are delighted to cater to both small weddings and the sequel weddings, and in some cases, both affairs!

The fun part is you can do the same theme for your small wedding and sequel wedding or do two completely different wedding themes. It all depends on what your budget is, of course. Many folks are recycling the original since most people won’t see it the first time. It’s been a rough year for everyone; you’re entitled to do whatever you want to do and whatever makes you feel happy.

Of course, some wedding guests may feel like they missed out on your smaller wedding this year. It’s important to remind them that this is for the health and safety of everyone. Let them know next year’s ceremony and reception will be the party of the decade and worth waiting.

While postponing or canceling your wedding this year due to COVID-19 may seem like a bummer, it’s an excellent thing if you look at it this way. It gives you even more plan to time your dream wedding and honeymoon. You can focus on all of the details that will make celebrating next year all the sweeter!

Now is the time to consider rescheduling or booking your sequel wedding caterer for your sequel wedding reception in 2021. We can handle both this year’s mini wedding or next year’s big blowout.
