Elevate Your Backyard BBQ

Last week we catered a graduation party in a backyard. No banquet hall, no fuss about formality — just a long table on the lawn, set with intention. Because a backyard is still a table, and a table is worth setting well.

The grazing board — abundance, but ordered.

The Grazing Board

Artisan cheeses · cured meats · fresh strawberries & apple · heirloom & sun-dried tomato · local honey · apricot marmalade · Kalamata olives

Abundance, but ordered. Meats fanned in a deliberate wave, cheeses ranked in clean rows, fruit placed for color rather than scattered. A board like this is a thesis statement before anyone takes a bite: there is more than enough here, and someone took care.

The honey, the marmalade, the olives sit just off the board — small invitations to build a better bite. None of them is strictly necessary. That is exactly why they register.

Tasty Table Catering Backyard BBQ Cocktail Hour Shrimp Shooters

Shrimp cocktail shooters — composed, one per guest.

Shrimp Cocktail Shooters

Poached jumbo shrimp · house cocktail sauce · fresh lemon · parsley

No communal bowl. No double-dipping. No guesswork about freshness. Each guest receives a complete, composed portion in its own glass — a small act of respect, repeated a hundred times across the afternoon.

This is what individual plating does: it tells every single person the food was made for them, not merely set out for them to fend over.

Tasty Table Catering Salad Shooters BBQ Cocktail Hour Caesar Salad Croutons

Caesar salad shooters — built to eat standing up.

Caesar Salad Shooters

Chopped romaine · classic Caesar · garlic crostini · parmesan frico

A salad you can eat standing up, one hand free for conversation — no fork-and-plate balancing act. Built vertically in glassware and finished with a garlic crostini and a lacy parmesan crisp.

Convenience without compromise. The format is practical; the execution is not casual.

Tasty Table Catering Appetizers Garlic Hummus Dip Station

Roasted garlic hummus — scratch-made, finished by hand.

Caesar Salad Shooters

Slow-roasted garlic · good olive oil · sun-dried tomato · parsley

The swirl. The thread of oil pooled in the well. The sun-dried tomato laid across the top by hand. None of it is necessary to feed anyone. All of it is the point.

Beauty is not the enemy of substance. It is the signal of it — the visible proof that someone made this rather than opened it.

Tasty Table Catering Dip Station Appetizers Cocktail Hour

The dip station — staged at varying heights, made to linger over.

The Dip Station

Roasted garlic hummus · herbed tzatziki · marinated artichoke & heirloom antipasto · two house pita chips

Hummus and tzatziki anchor it; marinated artichokes and heirloom tomatoes give it brightness; two kinds of pita chip give it texture — all staged at varying heights so the eye has somewhere to travel.

A good station does one thing above all: it invites people to stay. To graze, drift off, and come back — talking over the table the entire time.

Arugula salad — raised on a stand, composed to be seen.

Arugula Salad

Wild arugula · heirloom cherry tomato · feta · toasted pepitas · scallion · balsamic vinaigrette

Lifted onto a stand so it reads as a centerpiece, not an afterthought side. Peppery arugula, sweet heirloom tomatoes, salty feta, the snap of toasted pepitas — dressed with balsamic to order so nothing wilts.

Even the salad is arranged to be looked at. Especially the salad.

Four Moves to Elevate Your Own Backyard Table

None of these require a caterer. All of them require intention.

  1. Build in height. A table on one flat plane reads as a pile. Levels read as design. Risers, stands, and a tiered centerpiece turn a buffet into a composition — the eye climbs instead of skimming.

  2. Plate individually. Shooters and single-serve glassware do quiet work: they set the portion, protect freshness, and tell each guest the food was prepared for them. Respect, made physical.

  3. Make one disproportionate gesture. The honey with its dipper. The frico on the Caesar. The marmalade beside the board. A small, generous touch no one expected is the thing they will remember and retell.

  4. Cook from scratch — and let it show. The swirl in the hummus. Strawberries cut by hand. Scratch cooking is a posture before it is a flavor: it says the people at this table are worth the effort.

A graduation marks a threshold: one season of a young life closing, another opening. A table set with care says the moment was seen.

The table is where a family becomes visible to itself. Set it well and it does more than feed people: it tells them they belong, that this moment mattered, that someone cared enough to make it beautiful.

That is the whole of our work. Excellence is the floor. Intentionality is the standard.

And a backyard, set with care, is still a table.
